NEVER BOIL - TOXIC FOR BEES
BAD SUGAR: Organic Sugar, maple syrup, and molasses will all make bees SICK!
The amount of syrup a hive consumes during the fall depends on factors such as hive strength, colony size, and the availability of natural nectar sources.
Generally, a healthy colony preparing for winter will consume 2 to 3 gallons (7.5 to 11 liters) of 2:1 sugar syrup (2 parts sugar to 1 part water) over a few weeks.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
1. Strong colonies may consume up to 3 gallons of syrup in the fall as they prepare for winter and build up their honey stores.
2. Smaller colonies or colonies that are less well-established may take in less syrup, usually around 1 to 2 gallons.
3. Feeding should continue until the bees have filled their brood chamber with sufficient stores, which is typically about 60 to 80 pounds (27 to 36 kg) of honey or syrup.
Ensure you monitor your hive closely to avoid overfeeding or underfeeding, and adjust based on the specific needs of the colony.
